KNOW MORE

KNOW MORE'

The City of St. Peters' "Know More" ongoing education program focuses on Internet safety issues for adults and children. St. Peters is using its resources including the UpFront city newsletter, cable channel SPTV-10, and website to provide this information to residents and others interested in learning more. The program, introduced during a St. Peters Board of Aldermen meeting on Dec. 13, 2007, features information from local experts and provides other information resources available from across the country. The City of St. Peters is partnering with MidRivers Newsmagazine for this important project.

Why Do We Need to Know More?

The Internet has opened up a world of information, easily accessible from your home and anyplace else with a connection to the World Wide Web. It's a wonderful tool when safely and securely navigated. Information is shared back and forth, and so you send and receive data in order to use the Internet. You're online right now, reading a page sent via the City of St. Peters' website to your computer. You received this page on your computer screen because you clicked a link to the page or entered this page's address in the address box in your Web browser. You sent out a signal requesting this page because you're interested in this information.

Unfortunately, the information that reaches your computer from the Internet is not always something you sought or welcomed. This can include malicious software that can harm your computer or steal your personal information. Would-be predators could send messages seeking the trust of your child. Scam artists may send an email with the hopes of  taking your money. Your children, or anyone for that matter, could encounter harassing messages written online by bullies.

The good news is that we can control the information we send and the types of files we download. We can protect our computer and family with software aimed to block out malicious files and filter content. We can monitor our childrens' online use, and watch for signs of harassment. We may just need to Know More about these subjects to increase our chances of safely navigating the Internet.
